Tips and Tricks When Opting for Cheap, Used Appliances in Your Home (my own experience)

Operating a hotel restaurant taught me many things about the importance of appliances. They’re like the heart of any kitchen, and for households appliances are also the heart of your home comfort and lifestyle. For example you wouldn’t be so eager to bring 5 towels for your family to the beach if you knew you had to hand-wash those towels and air dry them yourself afterward. You might opt to bring just a few towels instead. Not having appliances limits your time and in many cases your freedom as well. But not everyone wants the most expensive latest models. Whether it’s because you love the vintage look or you’re trying to be economical in 2025’s economy, there’s nothing wrong with opting to buy cheap, used appliances instead, especially if you understand the following tips and tricks.

First, just like when you buy a brand new appliance, buying a used one also requires that you get your measurements right. New appliances make this easier because stores have so many to choose from and professional salesmen can bring up all the stats without you having to measure the appliance yourself. But when hunting for a good used appliance you might find the perfect deal only to discover that the dishwasher you brought home is two inches too wide to fit between your fridge and countertop. Avoid this hassle by knowing your dimensions and being strict about those dimensions when hunting for a used appliance.

Another thing to keep in mind before you select the appliance you buy is that most used appliances won’t come with a warranty, so where are you getting this used appliance? Is it from a sketchy dealer on Facebook Marketplace or is it from a trusted local used appliance store. If you do decide to buy a used appliance from a stranger online, it’s my rule that you got to be twice as vigilant about ensuring that it works before you buy it. It’s the same reason why a TV or a microwave with a “FREE” sign on it sitting on the curb will often take several days before someone grabs it. Most people who drive by and see that “FREE” sign will doubt the appliance even works, so don’t give money to the seller until you’re sure the appliance works.

Second, let’s assume you got your appliance and you’re bringing it home. You know it doesn’t have a warranty and you’re hoping it will do its job just as well as a brand new appliance that costs thousands of dollars. Assuming it does work, you still feel cautious that it might break down at any time, especially if you got a super good deal for it. Not all good deals are too good to be true though, so give yourself a pat on the back if the appliance does work, even if it’s loud and some of the buttons are worn. You already made it through the hardest part: finding a cheap, used appliance that works! However, your caution is still well warranted, but here’s a tip on how to lessen that caution and turn it into prudence.

One thing I always tell other restaurant owners is that they should always have a phone number for local emergency appliance repair on hand. Make a familiar relationship with your local appliance repair company, and you’ll feel better that even if your used appliance does break down in a year or two that you still saved money by opting to go for used rather than new because appliance repair service typically only costs a few hundred dollars, whereas getting a brand new appliance costs thousands. So don’t stress about it, just have that phone number ready.

On this blog I’ve talked about appliance repair before, but this next example (or long story) will help you see why having an appliance service expert’s phone number on hand is important.

When I was staying in Kelowna, British Columbia to visit a friend, the year was 2023, and it was summer, and if you know anything about Kelowna you might know that 2023 was the year forest fires devastated much of the land around the city. It wasn’t the best way to spend a vacation, but at least my friend was prepared. The fire was so bad that even the wooden poles holding the power lines got scorched, and many houses lost power for days. And to make things worse my friend lived on the fringe of West Kelowna where the devastation was at its worst. I was only in town for a few days when fire broke out. Thank goodness my friend has a trailer because it made evacuating easy. We simply drove a few towns over to camp, but when the evacuation advisory was lifted we went back to West Kelowna to find that although my friend’s house was unscathed it would be another week before we would get power back because all the power lines were burnt to a crisp.

So there we were after over a week of camping coming home to find that we’d be camping still but only it would be in a pitch-black house! Except, here’s the twist. Remember how I said my friend was prepared? Well, it’s because he had a gas generator. We wheeled that thing out back and cranked it on, and to save fuel we decided to sleep in the living room together where we could keep one AC unit and a appliances running (trust me you don’t want to be inside without AC during a Kelowna summer). The saddest part of this though was that neither of us had cellphone data, and no amount of gasoline no matter how many generators you got will help you get cellphone data. So all we had was call and text service for those last few days I was visiting. This is important to know, because what happened next is precisely why I’m telling you this long story.

So there we were sitting in the candlelit living room wishing we had a movie to watch as we got ready for dinner. We had stopped to grab some steaks and chicken to BBQ over the next few days and had connected the refrigerator to the generator to keep the meat chilled. But, lo and behold, when we opened the fridge to find our dinner we noticed that, hey, “Why isn’t the light turning on? Wait, the fridge isn’t working!”

inside old empty fridge
An old fridge to illustrate my story

At first we thought the generator wasn’t connected right but when we did the same thing to the oven it worked fine, so we knew the fridge was broken. Why was it broken? You guessed it! It was an old used fridge my friend had bought just a few months before. And there was no way my friend was going to go over a week without a fridge, because that meant he’d either have to eat preserved foods for a week or spend a fortune eating out. So instinctively I pulled out my phone and said, “I’ll get us an appliance repair guy. They might appreciate the business during this time after all.” But I was used to having a wifi connection, hence why I had no cellphone data, and so I immediately looked silly when the search browser on my phone failed to load. Habits, eh!

Like I said though, my friend was prepared. After he laughed at me he dug into a kitchen drawer under candlelight and retrieved a note that had the number (778) 561-4708 on it for appliance service in Kelowna, and the business was still open, thank goodness. Of course I recorded that phone number into my cell’s contacts while my friend called it up otherwise I’d be a hypocrite by giving you this advice. At least I was right about one thing. The experts on the other end of the line, like nearly every other business in Kelowna, had been slow since the fire broke out, and so they were eager to help us. In fact, they showed up in less than an hour and had the fridge humming healthily again in time to prevent our meat from spoiling. They fixed it so fast our meat was still a little cold by the time it was working again, and so we knew it was safe to BBQ. It was some of the best BBQ I ever had!

All this was to illustrate just how important having a local appliance expert’s phone number on hand is, because when you’re living with appliances that are nearly as old as you are you never know when that phone number will come in handy. Even after tipping that appliance repair company an extra $80 for our gratitude, my friend still saved money compared to being forced to eat out for a week. He would never settle for eating preserved foods like canned beans unless he actually really had to, but because we had that phone number ready he actually didn’t have to.

One other tip about owning old, used appliances is just as important, even if I don’t need to tell a long story to explain its importance. And that tip is something everyone knows but because it’s so obvious most people fail to remember it. And that’s simply educating yourself about your old appliances. Even YouTube is a great resource for learning about your appliances, because once you get educated about your brand and model you can avoid common mishaps and possibly even fix the appliance yourself in the case that it does break down. You might have a Maytag fridge from 1997 that was made before your kids were born, and by simply watching a YouTube video you might discover that that specific model often has an issue with its circuitry.

Here’s an example of the type of video that can educate you on your appliance:

So when your fridge breaks down you can order that circuit board you need from Amazon and save a few hundred dollars fixing the appliance yourself. But I understand that while most people know this is a good idea because it’s economical, barely anyone does it, which is why good appliance repair companies are always on stand by.

With all that, I wish you the best of luck with your used appliance hunt and hope you take some notes about what we discussed here. The time involved in being prepared and prudent might not seem worth it, but we only live once and being prudent has served mankind well for thousands of years, so be like a good restaurant owner and stay vigilant.

All the best!

Taking the Time to Upgrade or Repair Your Kitchen Appliances in 2023 (Updated)

A lot of us have more free time than we might want, especially those of us with empty restaurants to manage and operate. But, here’s another tip and piece of advice for us business owners in the restaurant industry to stay one step ahead of all the others who decide to waste this precious time. If you haven’t already innovated in the regard of offering take-out and food delivery like many restaurants I know have done, you can use this idle time to upgrade and repair your appliances.

How much time would your kitchen save if all your appliances were of the latest technology?

Now, I know what many of you will say right off the bat: “How can I afford to repair and replace my commercial appliances if I can’t even afford to keep my staff employed?” And, the truth is, I can’t answer that for you because government funding and loan services are different from state to state and province to province. I’m hoping this post will be a resource for restaurant owners for many years after the pandemic is over, because in a bit I’ll be talking about the importance of upgrading and repairing your appliances when it comes to beating the competition and staying ahead of the times.

If do, however, have a previous post where I go more into depth about how a restaurant can deal with this pandemic more easily. Now, let’s shift to our main topic.

Preparing for Post-Pandemic Restaurant Business Success by Fixing & Upgrading Appliances

When business is back to normal, there’s no doubt that the restaurants who have used their time wisely during the lock-down will have a major advantage in the economy. Whether you’ve been planning a marketing campaign, have upgraded your tables and chairs, etc, you will attract more customers than the older restaurants who refuse to move with the times. And, so, if you’re expecting a flood of business after restaurants reopen because you planned wisely and carefully, then you must make sure the equipment you have in your kitchen is working in optimal condition and can handle the rush and abuse that a busy restaurant requires. After all, life isn’t an epic fantasy adventure, even though a serial killer might say it is. This is reality, and if you’re stuck using old appliances from the 1980s when young adults are entering the business and drubbing the competition because they have the latest industrial dishwasher that can wash every dish in their inventory in less than 20 minutes while you have to pay someone hourly to wash 20 dishes every ten minutes then sorry but you deserve to lose. Unless, of course, your food is better!

How optimized is your restaurant kitchen?

To help explain the importance of having the latest appliances and how this will give you a significant advantage in the kitchen, let’s take a look at a domestic kitchen in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. There, I know someone who, for their whole life, had washed dishes by hand. The sad part was that they had a dishwasher in their inherited house the whole time; they just never bothered to repair it. Well, after I berated them over the phone some years ago, they finally got around to calling Appliance Repair Windsor and everything in their life changed. Just like how a restaurant would be able to operate much moire efficiently if they had a sophisticated dish washing machine, my friend in Windsor found himself with much more free time. Not only is he less sparing in the kitchen when it comes to cooking meals because he knows a machine will clean all this dishes for him, he uses all the free time that comes from not having to clean dishes by hand to do other things like take the dog out for a walk or check emails. Life for him has improved noticeably just from repairing one appliance and I know this effect will work wonders in your restaurant if you do the same.

So, if you have an oven that doesn’t heat up fast enough, a freezer that has a warm spot, a fridge that leaks water on the floor or simply an outdated appliance that’s wasting precious time for your busy kitchen, then seriously consider spending this precious time to handle the situation because the benefits will give you that special edge once the economy is on the rise.

And, there’s no doubt about it, the restaurant industry will be on the rise after the pandemic is over because so many people are sick of staying home. Just think of it. Now’s the time to innovate. Success is yours, and upgrading your appliances is just one way to get there.

Opening a Restaurant in Saskatoon, SK

For the most part we’ve tried to keep this blog objective but I have exciting personal news that is worth sharing. I’ve always dreamed of opening a restaurant in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada because that’s where my grandparents live and I have a daughter who is willing to take over the ownership once the business is off the ground. So let me tell you about my plans.

I have much experience in working with hotel restaurants and hotels in general but I’ve never started my own stand-along restaurant before. It’s been a dream of mine for nearly a decade now and I even have a 6 step plan to make it happen.

sask

Here are my 6 Steps for Starting a New Restaurant in Saskatoon!

  1. Find a good location
  2. Come up with a good menu and theme
  3. Move to Saskatoon
  4. Buy a building, get menu printed, theme constructed and staff hired
  5. Get good relations with a local appliance repair company
  6. Turn the open sign on and start marketing

A lot of these steps are straightforward, and I’ve touched on step 5 before (getting good relations with an appliance repair company) in another post, but I want to touch on that and step 3 a little more. These are the hardest steps for me, surprisingly, but I’m making headway. Cheers to that!

I already have a menu ready, a menu of my own recipes, many of them gleaned from my experience working with hotels. I already have a theme in mind. I have family and friends there I can hire for staff, but so far the only things holding me back is the BIG MOVE and starting local connections.

The reason why I’m having trouble moving is because I’m anchored to where I am by business ties. I think if I work harder than I usually do for the next few months I can get those anchors untied but that’s only a maybe. And when it comes to finding a company that does emergency appliance repairs, which is important for a restaurant to have for obvious reasons, I’m at a loss because I don’t live there yet and I like to meet people face to face. There’s some good luck in this matter though because I chatted a bit with Appliance Repair Saskatoon and they said they’d be willing to do what I’m looking for. I’ll have to give an update on that in the future.

So now I know that this dream is in progress and will soon be a reality. It’s only a matter of time. This is so exciting for me and I can’t wait. I’ll miss everyone here in my hometown but they understand how much this means to me and won’t hold me back.

I wanted to share this because I know many of you out there have similar dreams and I thought seeing someone else pursuing theirs might help you get motivated to pursue yours a little harder. I’m thankful you cared enough to read this and if you want to stay up-to-date with this story then come back on my blog in a few months to see where things are. Cheers to dreams coming true!

What Makes a Good Appliance Repair Company? (Updated 2023)

Whether you’re just curious or you want to know the best appliance repair company near you to hire, today we’ll be discussing what makes a good appliance repair company. There are many factors but we’ll touch on the top three, which are:

  1. Reliability
  2. Affordability
  3. Professionalism

Arguably reliability and professionalism can be under one category, but there’s more to professionalism than just being reliable. For an appliance service business, you want them to dress nice if they’ll be working in your hotel where customers will see them, and so this means a lot more than just showing up on time. Also, reliability can mean quality, and so when the technician fixes your fridge you’ll be able to rely on the results.

appliance repair

To get deeper into this, you don’t just want your appliance technician to dress nicely and show up on time with reliable results, you also want them to be polite in case customers hear them speak. If they’re working in your hotel and smoking and cursing, this says a lot about the lack of their professionalism and will in turn make your hotel seem less professional. That’s why you really want to test the waters and read reviews before hiring a company because it makes a big difference for you and not just your broken appliance.

Sure, there might be a team of rude, poorly dressed appliance mechanics than can fix your broken dish washing machine faster and cheaper than the professional companies out there like Appliance Repair Regina but that’s where our affordability factor comes in. You want a good balance between professionalism and affordability in a company because it’s not impossible to find a crew of technicians that not only act politely for your guests but also have low prices. The above-mentioned company in Regina is a good example of that.

Next, when it comes to affordability, this should include the cost of replacing appliance parts and getting a quote as well. Some companies may seem cheap but after the quote fee and the part replacement fee their original price can triple in cost! This is a part of doing business…

good business

At the end of the day, it’s up to you if you just want to hire the cheapest company you can, because hopefully they’ll get the job done and that’s all that matters for some hotel owners. But for me, I like to choose the good ones. And after all this has only been a discussion about what makes a good appliance repair company and not which ones you should hire unless you choose to hire the best like me. It was my intention to make this blog post informational, like some of my other posts have been, and so I hope you learned something interesting that you can apply in the real world.

If I don’t see you next time then I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

The Ease of Having a Laundry Room in Your Hotel

Even small hotels should have their own laundry room. After all, even Bates Motel did their own laundry. I only say this because I know a lot of hotels, motels and inns that pay for mobile laundry services and they could save a lot of time by installing some commercial laundry machines.

Washing all the bedding that a hotel goes through on a daily basis means lots of work. Hiring a staff member that cleans rooms could also do laundry. Even hiring someone who just does laundry is cheaper than hiring pick up and drop off laundry services.

I recommend that if you choose to install a laundry room that you make a good relationship with a local appliance repair company. This is something you should do even if you don’t have your own autonomous laundry system because all the mini fridges and other appliances in your hotel might break down and you want to get it repaired as soon as possible for the sake of your guests. Nothing ruins a hotel’s reputation and gives you bad reviews faster than having a broken ice machine!

So take this advice and use it well. I wish you the best of luck with your hotel business success! Don’t forget to stay tuned and bookmark https://hotel-restaurant-tilleuls.com/ because we have a lot more content on the way!
